The Isle of Palms really didn't start until Dr. Joseph Lawrence purchased the then called Long Island in 1898 and renamed it the Isle of Palms. He had a railway company that brought guests to his new resort along a trolly line from Mt Pleasant to the Isle of Palms. In 1912, James Sottile built a beach pavilion and amusement park to make the Isle of Palms a destination spot popular for Charlestonians. Slowly, small cottages were built on the southern end of the island and in 1929, the Cooper River Bridge was built to help get more visitors to the island. In the mid 1940's, J.C. Long bought the remaining undeveloped portion of the island and then started building homes for the returning verts from WWII. J.C. Long also built motels, motorcourts and duplexs to encourage vacationing guests. J.C. Long was a forerunner of a mixed use development with both year round residents and summer vacationers. It remained a small bedroom community with seasonal rentals until 1975 when Sea Pines bought the northen end of the Isle of Palms and created the Isle of Palms Beach and Racquet Cluib, thereby making the island known as a world class vacation destination point.
Today, the island is made up of about 1/3 residents, 1/3 second home owners, and 1/3 vacation rentals. The Isle of Palms has attained the near-perfect combination of preservation and development, creating an ideal beach resort for visitors and full-time residents alike, just a short drive from historic downtown Charleston. Located north of Charleston Harbor, the upscale barrier island exudes a feeling of community that most resort islands simply cannot offer. IOP is known for its cool breezes, mild winters and pleasant summers, the perfect setting for people in search of a year-round, warm-weather home. The Isle of Palms Parks and Recreation Department offers numerous activities for residents and tourists, and there's a full-service marina for boaters. On the north end of the island, the spectacular Wild Dunes Resort is home to two world-class championship golf courses. Both The Links and The Harbor Course were designed by renowned architect Tom Fazio.
Isle of Palms residents are a short drive from the most complete shopping center in the area. Towne Centre, in Mount Pleasant, was designed to look like a small Southern village and features national department stores and shops as well as locally owned businesses. Also nearby is Shem Creek, home to one of the area's last fishing boat fleets, unusual art galleries and several outstanding restaurants.
Other attractive properties can be found along the Intrarcoastal Waterway, tidal creeks and bays. Some new owners are removing existing structures to build a dream house with scenic views and ocean breezes. Lots ready for new construction are available in prime locations, even front row on the Atlantic Ocean. The island also has spacious inland lots with majestic live oaks and native palms as well. Condominiums are mostly concentrated in the Wild Dunes Resort which is on the north end of the island and also in the centrally located commercial district.
Isle of Palms real estate consists of properties ranging from exquisite mansions to 1 bedroom ocean front condos. There is something here for everyone.
